I am often asked, which of the seven countries I have relocated to so far was my favorite.

That's not an easy question to answer, because each one accompanied me through a different phase of my life, but Brazil has of course had an immense influence on me and certainly forms one of the most important foundations of my world-soul.

A country with such diverse and beautiful landscapes, warm people, a childlike and genuine zest for life, wonderful food, and enchanting music. Every Brazilian is immediately ready to drop everything for family/friends, a samba, or a good meal; they live and love as if there is no tomorrow. With music where the lyrics are like “My soul burns when the samba begins” or “When night opens its dark coat, the muse finds her poetry and the word finds its melody,” the word ‘longing’ is truly lived: “Saudade”!

It will always remain the country of my heart's longing. As fate has it, my eldest son, influenced from childhood by my stories and dishes from my childhood in Brazil, has also lost his heart to this country – somehow, the circle closes in a wonderful way.

Neuroscientific studies show that emotions are closely linked to episodic memory. Smells, music, or tastes can act as triggers, evoking memories with strong feelings even decades later. This has a lasting influence on our experiences and behavior. Early and repeated experiences abroad shape self-perception and intercultural competence for a lifetime.

The experience of living in different countries leaves a deep mark on our biographical and cultural memory. It is not only values, perception patterns, and communication, but also resilience and cognitive flexibility that form the basis of intercultural competence.

I am happy when people enjoy my articles and would be even more delighted if someone would occasionally write a few lines of feedback. For example, which country of relocation has had the greatest long-term impact on you and how?

“Bom dia maravilhoso!” (“Have a wonderful day!”)
